Job Duties and Responsibilities

Sling Media, a division of DISH Network, is known for inventing the Slingbox, and continues to innovate. Here are some projects we are working on:

  • SlingTV is TV for the new generation that frees customers from the tyranny of cable;
  • IoT: DISH owns impressive wireless spectrum and is building a narrow-band Internet-of-Things (NB-IoT) network that will drive new IoT applications.

Sling Media, a wholly owned subsidiary of Dish, in Foster City, CA, is looking for a Senior Data Scientist who will work closely with teams that can take insights and predictions you develop and affect change: product, engineering, marketing, operations, and support.

 

Primary responsibilities fall into the following categories:

  • Developing effective ways to do various analyses like customer segmentation, user modeling, churn analysis and prediction, LTV prediction, and otherwise processing large volumes of customer and device data with the intention of gaining actionable insights and making data-driven decisions.
  • Helping multiple audiences - engineers, product managers, executives - dig into and understand the output of your analysis and models using notebooks (e.g. Jupyter), visualization, presentations etc.
  • Looking for and adopting new techniques and tools to ensure the team stays at the forefront of modern large-scale data processing and analysis techniques
  • experience doing analyses where your focus was more about explaining and understanding the underlying process, variable relationships, causality etc. than attaining the highest prediction accuracies.

Skills - Experience and Requirements

A successful Data Engineer/Scientist will have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Math, Statistics, Computer Science, Physics, Cognitive Science, or equivalent quantitative training or experience with at least 5 years of experience working with data and data analysis in some form as well as:

 

  • 2 years experience in statistical modeling of complex systems such as business/industrial/econometric/physical/biological etc.involving a large number of variables, interactions and uncertainty.
  • 2 years experience with wide range of statistical and machine-learning tools such as under your belt, and the deep practical insight you have acquired from your training and experience helps you choose the best tools for a given problem.
  • 2 years experience with linear models for regression and classification, multi-level models, factor analysis & PCA, discriminant analysis, support vector machine, decision tree ensembles & bootstrap, neural networks, mixture models & clustering algorithms..
  • 2 years experience with Bayesian modeling and inference; you also know when and when not to use them based on practical considerations.
  • 2 years experience with programming languages commonly used for data analysis like R/Python and Spark
  • 2 years experience with SQL based relational databases

 

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experienced in working with large data sets, with big data processing tools like MapReduce, Spark, Hive, etc.
  • Experience doing basic preprocessing, cleaning and transformations.
  • Experience with different database and data warehousing systems like MySQL, Amazon Redshift, BigQuery, Teradata
  • Data visualization skills using programmatic tools (e.g. ggplot2) and tools like Tableau
  • Experienced in designing and analyzing controlled experiments
  • Experienced in survival analysis and time series modeling
